People get frustrated by slow loading, by the addition of technologies that work only in certain circumstances or where your web site is simply too technologically "clever".The latest "gadget survey" by Pew Internet shows that there is quite a bit of potential for annoyance with your web site anyway...! Almost half of all people surveyed claim that they have lost their Internet connection at some stage in the last month.

Look outside your own web site for sales

Internet marketers are busy trying to sell more and more online as the recession starts to take hold. They are beefing up their web sites, they are trying to gain more traffic and they are advertising like crazy in a bid to bolster their sales. But these are all the wrong things to do - at least in the first instance.Concentrating on your own web site is the last thing to do in order to try and gain sales at the moment. Instead, consider other ways of gaining sales. Last week a successful online retailer privately sent me some data showing where his sales had come from.

You must make your web site really easy to read

Readers of web sites do it quickly; they take a quick glance, get the gist of what is being said and then move on. Few people spend hours poring over every last detail of your web site or blog. To be sure those people understand, you need to aim your writing for primary school children.I've been testing the readability of a random sample of 50 web sites and blogs and most of them are at the "Graduate" level. In other words, you need to have a degree to understand them. That's not good.So that people can understand your web site you need to be writing for children aged around eight or nine years old.

Online shoppers make irrational choices - making selling easier

Shoppers make irrational choices; that's a conclusion you can draw from new consumer research from psychologists at the University of Chicago School of Business. The study looked at the influence of numbers on buying choices. It found that people chose things in a non rational way.For instance, when shown pictures produced by cameras they chose the camera which led to the best looking image. However, when shown the numerical resolution of the camera they chose a product based on that number - even if the pictures were rated worse than a camera with a lower resolution.Additional studies on the thickness of crisps and the number of air bags in a massage cushion also produced similar results.

Banks will disappear soon - centuries of tradition to be replaced by Internet systems

People aged over 40 are often amazed by what is happening online. Sometimes they find it difficult to consider things the way those born in the 1970s do. For instance, people under 30 tend to distrust corporates and they also seek the best solutions for what they want to achieve, regardless of brand. In spite of what you might think from media coverage, surveys tell us that the younger generations are not really that brand aware. That's a problem for traditional business which is geared around promoting brands.

To get real attention for your web site - build a brand

Look at the statistics for web usage and you soon discover that the most popular web sites in the world are those which are focused on specific brands. Search terms also tell a tale or two about the importance of brand. For instance, the latest figures on search popularity show that in the IT area, FIVE of the Top Ten search terms were for PayPal. In the Internet sector, Facebook and YouTube dominated the searches. This is, of course, no surprise - but it does show us something interesting. People are using search engines to find brands, such as Facebook or PayPal, when all they need to do is type the brand name into the address bar to be automatically taken to the brand without conducting a search.

Little and often will make you happy with social networking

The businessman at the back of the room wasn't that happy. When I asked an audience of business owners if any of them had used social networking one man at the back put up his hand: "I tried it once but it didn't do me any good," he said.In fact, that's quite a common reaction. Most people who sign up for social networking sites, such as Facebook or Ecademy, try out some of the more obvious features but then give up. Only every now and then do they venture back in to the network and gradually they fade away as they become unhappy with the system for its apparent failure to help them.New research on the strange combination of religious practice and exercise suggests a reason why most people don't find anything positive in social networking.

Building relationships in ecommerce

Customers love to be loved. In fact, we tend to shy away from companies who dislike us in some way. Only last week, after 9 years of loyal custom, I cancelled my Annual Membership with the RAC; I had found I could get an equivalent breakdown service for a quarter of the price. I rang the RAC and said I wanted to cancel my membership. I was asked why and I explained I had found an alternative supplier. I was then told my membership would be cancelled in 30 days. I wasn't asked any further questions, nor was any attempt made to keep me as a customer.

Obama wins - but so can you if you use "contextual priming" on your web site

Congratulations to President-Elect Obama - an historic victory. But part of his success may be down to a psychological phenomenon known as "contextual priming". A study performed last year revealed that the building you vote in has an effect on who you decide to vote for.In essence, the context of our surroundings affects our thinking. People voting in schools, for instance, are more likely to vote for a candidate who supports extra school spending - no matter what their political allegiance.

Will the US election be won online?

So, it's election day in the USA - and the world awaits the decision of the voters. Will it be McCain or Obama? The latest polls put Obama ahead by at least 5%. Already this is being hailed as the election that was won online. There are plenty of election blogs around as well as dedicated election sections of traditional newspapers. We hear that Obama has raised most of his campaign funds via online donations and that millions of people have watched the TV debates via YouTube rather than on a normal TV set.So, it's all online is it? No.
