Is it wrong to fancy Seasick Steve? Scala, last night *****

30 Oct 2007 14:48 2 comments

Swoon*** Seasick Steve...a very handsome man indeed.

Right now Iv'e got that out of the way lets get down to the nitty gritty. Last night's gig at the Scala was awesome. Seasick Steve transports you to the sweaty, dirty, filth of hobo Americana. The grooves are slick, stomp your feet barn dance hard and the voice is full of pain, love and wisdom. One minute your splitting your sides with laughter chanting "We know about you Sherman" and the next your heart melts as he recounts the story of his step daddy beating the hell out of him. This gig is not just a gig. That would be underselling it. Its an experience. More...

UK Festival Awards

30 Oct 2007 13:12 No comments

Hooray I have secured myself an invite to this years UK Festival Awards which is taking place Tuesday November 6th at KOKO in Camden with the Cuban Brothers hosting the night.

Some of the year’s best breakthrough bands will be performing at the event including The Brighlights, Scouting for Girls plus a mysterious secret third act.

Ex-Beta Band genius Steve Mason, will be DJing at the after party along with Tall Paul, who is performing an exclusive alternative set. It looks set to be a great and besides, I love the UK festival Awards as they reward all those people who work so damn hard to put on wicked festivals for us lucky punters. More...

AMENDMENT - Holy Cow! Maybe another chance to play at Glastonbury

25 Oct 2007 13:03 No comments
The lead up to Glasto has officially started with the organisers launching Holy Cow, a night of new music that will take place irregularly up until next June. It will consist of a selection of exciting new bands. The bands that play on the night will not necessarily be on next year’s Festival bill, but they do promise to showcase some of the most exciting unsigned talent available.

The Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition is still running and will be opening soon with the winners guaranteed a slot at the Glastonbury Festival in June.

The first event took place last night and bands included Envy Corps and Vampire Weekend. More...

Dylan sells out...again

24 Oct 2007 21:03 No comments

News has just reached Jukebox HQ that the much loved (here anyway - you only have to see how many times I ref the guy) Bob Dylan has sold out again (Victoria's Secret I kinda understand it but Starbucks? Come on!)and is now the face of the Cadillac Escalade.

Kelly Nestruck is blogging about it on the Guardian site and its a cracking read.

Why are all the people I idolise acting strange? Is it maybe because they really weren't that cool in the first place? My mind won't even entertain that idea. I'd much rather believe anything pre-1980 was cool and that anything thereafter is ****. Yes glad I cleared that up I feel much happier now. More...

Kill Your Darlings - check out Ed Laurie

23 Oct 2007 09:39 5 comments

Kill Your Darlings is the new club night from Bella Union and Curious Generation. This week's kicked off with Ed Laurie, The Monroe Transfer and Peter von Poehl.

Ed Laurie is a genius. He has a voice like syrup on pancakes and strums the most delicate, heartfelt chords on his nylon stringed guitar. The back up from cello, double bass, keyboard and percussion adds an eerie, haunting feeling to the Latin tinged songs. It’s a Dylan in a Cubanesque landscape with a punchy baritone voice…lush.

Unfortunately the night went down hill from there. The Monroe Transfer are 6 people playing viola, violins, double bass, drums, guitars, glockenspiel, trombone, ukulele, samples, effects & distorted recordings, all played with a range of picks, bows, mallets, sticks, screwdrivers and electronics. Congrats to Liam and Nicole

Being a huge Oasis fan I was happy to hear that Liam and Nicole got hitched on the weekend - well according to Sara Cox.

So did they or didn't they? Maybe Coxy said it to throw the press off the scent.

Either way good luck, mwah*

Sweden's Finest Export

After a thrilling live performance at The End of the Road festival my hunt for more information on the elusive Hyacinth House began. First off I had to make do with this clip on YouTube but eventually I managed to track down singer and band leader Mack for this exclusive interview… First off I am really excited that I have tracked you down. Could you just start of by telling me a little bit about how the band started?
The first CD was made as a solo album but during the progress it somehow became a band. It's a long story and I can't explain it properly so therefore I don't even try. Someday you're just in the middle of something together. More...

Marianne Faithful - Memories, Dreams and Reflections***

17 Oct 2007 11:01 No comments
So I have finished the current Marianne book in once again record time. There is something about all of Marianne's stories that keep you entranced. Now this is very different to Faithful - her original and hugely successful first biography. It is more little tidbits from that first book with an update at the end I guess mainly concentrating on her cancer scare.

This is probably only for REAL Marianne devotees and doesn't cover much more than the first novel - it's clear this was done for money. I hate to say it as you know I love her heaps but a girls gotta do.

Highlights include the chapter on Henrietta Moraes, "She was a precocious little Existentialista, at an early age a habitue of infamous Soho watering holes" and when she receives a curse from the director Kenneth Anger. More...
